The Town of Chestertown purchased the marina in 2012 and immediately identified the need for revitalization. The marina is a major hub for the local economy and has historical significance as one of the six Royal Ports of Entry for the Royal Navy during colonization. The need to improve the marina and protect it from the effects of climate change were clearly important.
The Town underwent the $6 million revitalization project utilizing grants, loans, property sales, and private donations. One of the important factors of the project was not only to make it a functional and aesthetic feature of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, but to improve its environmental impacts on the Chester River and the Chesapeake Bay.
Chester River Landscaping, LLC installed two permeable pavement areas using PaverGuide as the base and reservoir. With the project directly adjacent to the Chester River, ground water is a key concern when trying to construct effective stormwater runoff controls. The site, which previously would flood frequently, had to be raised over two feet. PaverGuide was selected and installed at the marina to bridge over the deep stone base and saturated soil below, and to stabilize the pavers. The visitors to the historic Chestertown Marina will enjoy a stable paver walkway without holes or overturned pavers for decades to come, while knowing that the paver areas will improve the water quality of the Chester River and the Chesapeake Bay.
The Town is extremely happy with the way the project turned out and the inclusion of the PaverGuide product. Mr. Bill Ingersoll, Town Manager, called PaverGuide “An incredible product.” The engineers at DMS & Associates, Inc. plan on specifying PaverGuide again because of the ease of design, installation, and performance.
Kevin Shearon P.E. with DMS & Associates the designer of the project stated “ PaverGuide is a good product and we will definitely use it again.”
